Happy New Year to everyone visiting my website site. I’m kicking off with some exciting news:
A Collaboration of jewellery and sculpture running for a month commencing Feb 18th 2025.
I’m really thrilled to have been invited by the organisers to show, as a sole jeweller, in this forthcoming exhibition entitled ‘Introspection’ at Creative Melbourne Gallery, Derbyshire. This involves a collaboration between myself, a renowned and hugely talented sculptor (who is also a well known TV personality, as well as having a degree in ceramics) plus other 2D artists. I’ve been using casting techniques which are a first for me – but it’s been a really exciting creative journey to develop this new way of making. I’ll be posting more details about this exciting exhibition in February’s blog and also sharing some images of the work as it’s been in progress- so watch this space! But it’s time for a bit more about me, to new visitors to my website and those not familiar with my work. It’s also been a while since I posted anything here – making things has been a priority like many artists- but I am aware that need to step up on my marketing this year, so here goes!
My focus is on creating unique pieces of jewellery that are not only stunning but also ethically and environmentally conscious. I work with recycled silver and gold, and source gemstones from countries in which poor working conditions and child labour (used to cut gemstones) are outlawed. This sourcing means that I can rarely reproduce gemstone rings exactly when asked, but it also means that all of my pieces are one off original creations. I also have a zero waste policy, recycling all scrap metal myself or by sending it away for recycling.
I’m based in Wirksworth, Derbyshire, where I have a studio at Haarlem Artspace, located in Haarlem Mill, an old cotton mill and legacy of Sir Richard Arkwright. The mill is significant in being the first cotton mill in the world to use a steam engine to generate power. It now houses a vibrant group of artists and makers from diverse disciplines and, for me, being part of this community is really important- making jewellery is afterall a fairly solitary occupation! But back to about my work! A question you could ask is why choose to buy or commission sustainable jewellery from me?
Well, if you buy jewellery from me, or ask me to make a piece for you, you can be confident that the processes used have been designed to minimise adverse environmental impact. Your piece will have had another life being made of recycled metal afterall!
All my packaging is made from recycled and recyclable materials, I even reuse jiffy bags sent from my main supplier wherever possible. But importantly, in a world where we are bombarded with mass produced products from corporate businesses, as my valued customer you are supporting a small local business based in the Derbyshire Peak District. Not only are you supporting me but also local craftsmanship and contributing to the Derbyshire artistic community.
So that’s all from me for now, I’m really looking forward to updating the blog with images of the collaborative project with Creative Melbourne Gallery when its underway – but for now it’s under wraps!
Wishing you all a productive and successful month
